Influential Cardiovascular Research

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, afflicting both men and women of every race and ethnicity. In the United States, it accounts for approximately 1 out of 4 deaths each year. The Detroit Medical Center prides itself on not only providing expert cardiovascular care, but in being a leader in cardiovascular research. It is our goal to study cardiovascular disease with the intention of gaining a better understanding of the underlying cause and to translate that research into action. Through our research, we can create methods to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease more effectively.

We know that smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are major risk factors for heart disease. While there are certain environmental and lifestyle choices that can impact the potential for heart disease, genetics also play a role. Additionally, the way that heart disease manifests in women is vastly different than men. All of our research efforts are dedicated to better advancing the ability to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease and to improve quality of care and patient outcomes.
