Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Medical Director for Cardiovascular Services, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital

“I am an adult cardiothoracic surgeon with niche expertise in minimally invasive / robotically-assisted valve and arrhythmia surgery. I lead a team of experts, trained in latest evidence based methods to alleviate human suffering and deliver safe and cost effective patient care.”

Education

  • Medical School and Internship: All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India
  • Residency: Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Approved Training, UK
  • Fellowship: (Cardiothoracic Surgery) Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD

Background

Dr. Kaushik Mandal is a graduate of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India, and has won the Prof V Ramalingaswami Best Intern award as a graduating student from this prestigious college. He then completed his general surgery training from AIIMS and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. His research in the field of autoimmunity, inflammation, atherosclerosis, and arrhythmia – while pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of London – led to the award of the honorary fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology. The pursuit of excellence brought him to Johns Hopkins, as he was selected to be one of two ACGME fellows that Johns Hopkins accepts each year to its Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship. Dr. Mandal extended his training by another three years to further his clinical skills in the area of minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary transplantation. After completing the cardiothoracic surgical fellowship, he joined the faculty in 2011. Dr. Mandal was the Director of Robotic Cardiac & Transcatheter Valve Therapies at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and was promoted to Associate Professor in February 2018. He was subsequently recruited by Penn State University Hershey Medical Center to start their robotic & minimally invasive cardiac surgery and its surgical research program where he had the rare distinction of being its Director. The move to DMC Medical Group as the Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital and an honorary appointment as Professor of Surgery (PAR) at Wayne State University is a further high point in his career. It brings the new delight of working amongst ex-Johns Hopkins colleagues and mentors.

Despite a busy clinical cardiac surgery practice, Dr. Mandal has continued to publish in peer-reviewed journals and has more than 2,000 citations with a Hirsch index (h-index) of 19. Several important distinctions evidence his reputation as an international authority in the field of cardiac surgery. Dr. Mandal is on the editorial board of Heart Surgery Forum and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for many prestigious research journals, including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Circulation, and the Journal of Molecular & Cellular Cardiology. His contributions as a surgeon researcher in the field of arrhythmia were recognized by the Heart Rhythm Society, by accepting him as a Fellow of Heart Rhythm Society – an award seldom bestowed upon surgeons. Dr. Mandal has been invited by the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs for both chairing CME sessions and for teaching CME courses on “High Risk Mitral Valve Surgery with Ventricular Assist Device Backup” and has given grand rounds on Robotic mitral valve surgery and arrhythmia surgery at nationally prominent Universities such as UCLA, Penn State University and is a frequently invited speaker at the Royal Society of Medicine, UK.

Dr. Mandal’s wife, Saradamani, is a full-time homemaker and the “key arch” that holds the family together. They have been married for over two decades and have two wonderful kids. Mrinmayee, their daughter, is 18 years old and a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She is pursuing majors in Electrical/Computer Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. Shibendu, their son, is 14 years old and is a sophomore in high school. He would love to be accepted into the University of Michigan’s acclaimed Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering program. Dr. Mandal enjoys reading, cooking, and playing the piano in his spare time.
