What Is Urology?

Urology focuses on the urinary tract of men, women, and children, as well as the male reproductive system. Multiple organs are covered by urology, including:An image of a doctor in an office holding a pen and paper while smiling at a patient.

Kidney stones, kidney cysts, kidney infections, kidney disease, acute kidney failure, and cancer are all diagnosable by a urologist. Symptoms of kidney issues include little or too much urine, cloudy urine, bloody urine, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting amongst others.

Adrenal glands

Cushing’s Syndrome, Hyperaldosteronism, Pheochromocytoma/Paraganglioma, and Addison’s Disease are all diagnosable by urologists. Symptoms of adrenal gland issues include high blood pressure, muscle and bone weakness, rapid heart rate, abdominal pain, weight loss, extreme fatigue, and excessive urination, amongst others.

Complications in the ureters can obstruct the urine, meaning there is a blockage preventing urine from passing through the ureters. This can lead to issues including urinary tract infections (UTI), or kidney stones. Symptoms of ureter issues include difficulty urinating, pain while urinating, high blood pressure, and urinary tract infections.

Urinary bladder

Several urinary bladder issues are common results of bacterial infections, urinary blockages, and sexual intercourse. Irritants such as coffee and alcohol can also cause issues in the bladder due to their level of acidity and diuretic qualities. Many people experience urinary bladder disorders in the form of urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, and interstitial cystitis.

Issues within the urethra include urethral stricture which is when the opening of the urethra is narrowed, urethral cancer which is a rare disease seen more often in men than in women, and urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra. Symptoms of urethra issues include pain while passing urine, bloody urine, lower abdominal pain, a sudden sense of urgency to urinate, and pressure in the abdomen.

Male reproductive organs

Several urological conditions can affect the male reproductive system, some of which include enlarged veins in the scrotum, benign prostatic hypertrophy or enlarged prostate glands, erectile dysfunction, and infertility.
