Treatment of Uterine Fibroids in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan

The knowledgeable women’s health physicians at DMC Medical Group provide treatments for uterine fibroids in Detroit and southeastern Michigan. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that typically appear during childbearing years. These growths are not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer, and almost never develop into cancer. We provide services in Bingham Farms, Bloomfield Hills, Commerce Township, Dearborn, Detroit, Farmington Hills, Hartland, and Livonia.

Many women have uterine fibroids at some point in their lives, but often are unaware of them because they frequently cause no symptoms. Uterine fibroids can range in size from seedlings that are undetectable by the human eye, to large masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus, and some women may have just one fibroid, while others may have multiple. In extreme cases, uterine fibroids can expand the uterus to the extent that it reaches the rib cage and adds weight.

Uterine fibroids are often discovered by a physician during a pelvic exam or prenatal ultrasound, and the patient may otherwise have never known that they had them. If the fibroids do cause symptoms, however, these may include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Periods that last more than a week
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Constipation
  • Backache or leg pains
  • Acute pain when the fibroid outgrows its blood supply and begins to die (rare)

Fibroids can be found in the muscular uterine wall (intramural), bulging into the uterine cavity (submucosal), or projecting to the outside of the uterus (subserosal). While uterine fibroids usually are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort and lead to anemia. In some cases, fibroids can interfere with pregnancy or raise the risk of complications during pregnancy. Many treatment options exist, including hormonal or non-hormonal medications, pain medications, supplements, non-invasive procedures, minimally invasive procedures, or traditional surgical procedures. Depending on the treatment option used, pregnancy may or may not be possible after, and your physician will discuss these options and the considerations for each of them with you.

The skilled and understanding women’s health physicians at DMC Medical Group will discuss all of your treatment options for uterine fibroids in Detroit, and work as your partners in determining which choice is right for you.
